First response (the wet day)
If the cellar is in water now:
- Electricity — if water is near sockets or the consumer unit, treat it as unsafe. We are not an emergency electrician.
- Stop adding water — washing machine discharge into the cellar, a burst in the kitchen above, a downpipe emptying at a chute. Plumbing leaks are not Type C and are not the Aire.
- Pump-out — a wet vac or a hired pump may clear a mill coal hole. A tanker on Park Road or by the Five Rise is rare, neighbour-sensitive, and fights visitor traffic; say so if you think you need one.
- Do not hack off plaster as a panic move, and do not paint slurry on wet millstone “to seal it”.
- Photograph the high-water mark on the party wall and note the date against river levels if you live in the valley. That mark is evidence for the later survey.
Bingley Cellar Waterproofing is not a 24/7 flood-restoration franchise. If you need a same-day pump-out, say so on the phone. The waterproofing specification still waits until we can see the empty room.
What “the Aire or the canal rose” usually means here
Bingley sits on the Aire with the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in the same valley. Typical patterns:
- Standing water after an Aire peak on Park Road / Ferncliffe / Dubb Lane / Wellington Street mill cellars — valley groundwater, residual floodplain water, a surcharged combined drain, sometimes a chute that took surface flow. Photograph the mark against the EA peak.
- Seepage while the river is quiet, canal-side — the perched Leeds & Liverpool cut at Five Rise (and Three Rise / Dowley Gap) can load millstone from above. This is not “rising damp” in the estate-agent sense.
- Wet on a “dry” week on the mill strip — buried goits and leats along Park Road / Dubb Lane still move water when nobody has flooded.
- Film after rain on a Crossflatts slab — garden land drain, not a river event. Still cellar flooding 60 as a bolster term ; the hydrology is different.
- Eldwick / Gilstead / Priestthorpe hillside — runoff down toward the town. Do not write an Aire-flood story for that house.
- Not Worth Valley, not Ilkley Moor, not a 1930s Leeds clay parish.

Full waterproofing is the second job
A flooded cellar that dries and never returns may only have needed a drain repair or a path re-cut away from the chute. A flooded cellar that returns with the river, the canal, or the rain is a candidate for cavity drain and a sump.
The discovery survey is booked once you can get into the room. Cost sits on the cost page as ranges, not a flood-day guess.

FAQs
Is every wet Bingley cellar a river-flood cellar?
No. Valley mill terraces might be river, canal, or a buried goit. Canal-side houses might be a perched Five Rise pound. Crossflatts gardens are often land drains. Eldwick / Gilstead / Priestthorpe are usually hillside. Treating all of them as “the Aire” is how you buy the wrong repair.
Should I run a dehumidifier and wait?
After a one-off plumbing leak, sometimes. After repeated Aire peaks on a Park Road slab, a dehumidifier hides the smell and does not fix the path the water takes.
Will you come out the same day as the flood?
